Harbor Island, Seattle, King County, Washington
Harbor Island is a man-made island at the mouth of Seattle’s Duwamish River, where it flows into Elliott Bay. It was completed in 1909 by the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company and was the largest artificial island in the world at the time, measuring 1.4 km2. The island has been used for commercial and industrial activities such as secondary lead smelting, shipbuilding and repair, bulk petroleum storage, metal production, and containerized cargo shipping since 1912. The island is home to warehouses, laboratories, and other structures.
