Enumclaw, King County, Washington, 98022
Enumclaw is a city in King County, Washington, with a population of 12,543 according to the 2020 census. The Enumclaw Plateau, on which the city is located, was produced around 5,700 years ago by a volcanic mudflow from Mount Rainier. Enumclaw is derived from a Salish term that translates as “place of evil spirits,” presumably alluding to Enumclaw Mountain, which is located approximately 9.7 kilometers to the north. The mountain’s name was derived from a horrible incident that occurred there or from the region’s occasional violent windstorms from the east. The narrative of two brothers, Enumclaw and Kapoonis, who were turned into thunder and lightning by their father is told in Native American mythology.
